Terrorism survives
Sir, - The Afghan war, a reverberation of the September 11
attacks, has made Afghanistan a deserted country and rendered
thousands homeless. The war has transformed world politics,
especially in our region.
Despite the U.S. President, Mr. George Bush's claim that the war
would be ``short and sharp,'' heavy bombings have failed to break
the Taliban resistance and capture Osama bin Laden - dead or
alive. No one is gaining in this so-called ``war for peace.'' The
only person who is gaining seems to be the wily Pakistan
President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who, with his tight-rope
walking, keeps on hold his arch-rival.
The Afghan war may or may not ensure global peace but it is
certainly not going to end terrorism. However, a new power
equation may emerge and the sufferings of the Afghans may not go
in vain.
