Police directive to Internet centres

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, NOV. 6. Internet browsing centres in Pondicherry have been instructed with immediate effect that their customers should record their names, addresses and stations to which the mails are being sent, said the SP, Mr. S. Shanmugasundaram, here today.

Speaking to newspersons, he said this has been introduced for security purposes. Meetings were held with the proprietors on October 30 and circulars issued directing that all particulars of their customers should be entered in a separate log book by customers. The police instructions should also be prominently displayed in the premises and inspection of records would be conducted periodically.

There are nearly 90 browsing centres at different points in Pondicherry, the SP said.

The police would instal secret cameras on building tops at three junctions on Gandhi Road, Mission Street and Bharati Street to monitor the festival rush and to prevent any untoward incident.

Policemen with binoculars would be present at important junctions.
