MTC invites tenders for various services
By Akila Dinakar
CHENNAI, NOV. 6. A cash-strapped Metropolitan Transport
Corporation, which is making fervent attempts to make ends meet
with more demand for services from the public and less to offer
on the supply line, has invited tenders for undertaking various
services.
The advertisement boards from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control
Board (TNPCB) campaign on reducing the use of plastics and
highlighting the hazards of PVC. This has proved an instant
success in spreading the message, particularly to vehicle drivers
who are caught in traffic jams behind buses.
Now, Metrowater has also gone in for propagating the message of
rainwater harvesting through their display boards on the rear of
MTC buses.
With several concrete bus shelters giving way for glow sign
boards with advertisement sponsorship, the MTC has also invited
tenders for display of advertisements in bus terminals.
Among other revenue-yielding measures are letting out space in
bus depots and terminals on rent for a period of six months.
Following suggestions from the public, the MTC has proposed that
space on bus passenger and season tickets will be used for
advertisements. Three firms have approached the MTC for printing
of tickets with advertisements. While the stationary will be
printed by the Government, the cost will be recovered from the
company, officials said.
Besides maintenance of a cycle stand at Vallalar Nagar, public
and corporates have been invited for participation in a tender to
maintain toilets in bus terminals on a pay and use basis.
In the Adyar and Besant Nagar bus terminus, plans are afoot for
developing vacant space by landscaping and display of
advertisements through glow sign boards and the private sector
participation has been sought.
To make it convenient for common public, sponsors have been
accosted to put up departure timing boards with electronic
display facility.
Mr. Swaran Singh, MTC Managing Director said to provide service
for the public and at the same time earn revenue, the Corporation
also plans to let out space in bus terminus for construction of
petty shops which can cater to the floating population waiting to
board buses.
