Minister seeks transfer of related departments
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, NOV. 6. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has
taken the initiative to streamline its operations and bring under
its purview some related departments such as the commodity boards
and the Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development
Authority (APEDA) from the Commerce Ministry.
It has approached the Prime Minister to transfer to itself
departments related to processing and agricultural commodities
export promotion to ensure better functioning of interrelated
areas and eliminate overlapping.
According to the Union Minister of State for Food Processing
Industries, Mr. Chaman Lal Gupta, the performance of this sector
was affected because production, processing and exports were
under the control of different Ministries. Mr. Gupta, who
addressed a PHD Chamber of Commerce seminar on ``Strategy to
Promote Export of Processed Food from North India'', said boards
for tea, coffee, coconut and spices and the APEDA should be
directly under the charge of his Ministry.
