India rejects Pakistan charge
NEW DELHI, NOV.6. India today rejected of its troops firing
across the Line of Control in the Neelam Valley sector in Jammu
and Kashmir.
A Defence Ministry spokesman said that Indian Army units along
the border had strict instructions to open fire only when fired
upon. Though routine exchanges took place daily, only small arms
were used.
The spokesman said that it was only Pakistani troops which used
heavy weapons normally to provide covering fire to push in
mercenaries.
Earlier, in Islamabad the chief military spokesman, Maj. Gen.
Rashid Qureshi, accused Indian troops of opening mortar barrage
killing one civilian and injuring some others. The Pakistani
troops responded effectively and ``silenced Indian guns'' he
claimed.
