Remembering Tintin

KABITA ROY

Netherlands issued a miniature sheet containing two stamps on the internationally famous comics character 'Tintin'. The Belgian artist Georges Remi, alias Herge, created Tintin in 1929. Since then, every child of the world grows up with him.

The intrepid reporter travelling the world with his dog Snowy, was inspired by the great reporters of the time. After adventures in Russia, Africa, North America and the Far East, Tintin even travelled to the moon. Herge researched these stories so thoroughly that his drawings, made 19 years before the first manned moon landing, proved to be extraordinarily accurate. When Herge died at the age of 75 on March 3, 1983, Tintin also died a little. He has never appeared in a new adventure since then.

The images used on the stamps are from 'Explorers on the Moon', first published in 1954. The sheet with two stamps was issued on October 10, 1999 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of man landing on the moon.
