Patur women hit the road!
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD,SEPT.21. Enterprising women of Patur, a roadside
village on the Hyderabad-Ramagundam Rajiv Rahadari, found an
ingenious way to market the vegetables grown on their farms.
The farm-fresh vegetables are heaped on the road abutting the
farms between Gouraram and Pragnapur on the highway, about 40 km
from the city. On a drive to or from the city on the highway, one
cannot resist the temptation of halting at what can be aptly
termed a `roadside Rythu bazar'.
It is a good bargain for those returning to the city to pick up a
bagful of vegetables at throwaway prices. The choice, however, is
limited to bottle gourds, brinjals, tomatoes, potatoes and leafy
vegetables.
For the poor women, it is a handsome deal. There is no need to
worry about the hassles of transport to the distant urban market
or a brush with the commission agents.
If weather cooperates, nearly a dozen women pile up their produce
on this high-density route during day time and do a brisk
business. "We earn anything up to Rs. 200 a day," a woman said.
