126 more all-women stations to be set up
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, SEPT. 21. In what was one of her last orders before she
ceased to be Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa directed the
setting up of 126 more all-women police stations (AWPS) in a
phased manner.
At present, there are 58 stations. As offences against women
needed to be treated on a different footing and also as women
were discriminated against, Ms. Jayalalithaa during the review of
the police department in June, said the number of AWPS would be
increased so that there was one station in each of the 184 police
sub-divisions in the State.
Accordingly, 50 stations would be opened in the current financial
year, 40 next year and 36 during 2003-2004.
Orders were issued for posting one woman sub-inspector and two
women constables in each circle headquarters police station, for
the police to be in greater proximity to women, particularly in
places where there are no AWPS. Thus, each of the 1217 police
stations in the State would have a woman SI and two women
constables within the next two years, an official release said.
