Cloudburst kills seven

DEHRA DUN, SEPT.1. Seven persons, including three children, have been killed and many others seriously injured in the cloudburst in the Gona village in the Tehri district of Uttaranchal. There has been heavy loss of property in the villages and cattle have also died in the cloudburst, which occurred at midnight on Thursday. Five bridges have been washed away and many roads damaged in the cloudburst, according to the Tehri district magistrate.

The cloudburst affected an area of 15 km and its sound echoed over a distance of ten km. More than a dozen bodies of animals, mostly buffaloes,have been recovered in the village. Eleven houses in the village have been destroyed and several damaged severely. Some villagers are reported missing.

Rescue work has been hampered by the falling debris in the hills.

Gona village is about 100 km away from the new Tehri town.
