Chembai music fete begins today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 1. A week-long music festival is being
organised here from September 2 to observe the 105th birth
anniversary of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar.
It will be inaugurated by Mr. V. Ramachandran, deputy chairman,
State Planning Board. The meeting will be followed by a vocal
recital by Mr. Papanasam Asok Ramani, accompanied by Mr. Muttara
Ravindran on the violin, Mr. Parassala Ravi on the mridangam and
Mr. V. S. Subramani on the ghatom.
The following are the other principal concerts:
September 4 -- Carnatic vocal by Mr. Sanjay Subramanian; Mr. S.
Eswara Varma (violin); Mr. Mavelikkara Velukutty Nair and Mr.
Rajesh Nath (mridangam);
September 5 -- Carnatic vocal by Ms. Sudha Raghunathan; Mr. S.
R. Vinu (violin); Mr. R. Vaidyanathan (mridangam); Mr. Kottayam
Unnikrishnan (ghatom);
September 6 -- Carnatic vocal by Mr. Rajkumar Bharathi; Mr.
Durai Swaminathan (violin); Mr. Vaikom Venugopal (mridangam); Mr.
P. L. Sudhir (ghatom);
September 7 -- Flute concert by Mr. K. S. Gopalakrishnan; Mr. K.
Venkitachalam (violin); Mr. Thiruvananthapuram Surendran
(mridangam); Mr. V. Karthikeyan (ghatom);
September 8 -- Carnatic vocal by Mr. Abhishek Raghuram; Mr. S.
Mahadeva Sarma (violin); Mr. Palakkad R. Raghu (mridangam); Mr.
Udupi Sreedhar (ghatom).
The 3-30 p.m. and 5 p.m. concerts will feature Ms. Aruna and Ms.
Nitya Sivaram, Ms. Karthika and Ms. Keerthana Vaidyanathan, Ms.
N. S. Lakshmi, Ms. Baby Sriram, Ms. Rajini and Ms. Gayatri. A
percussion ensemble, directed by Mr. R. Vaidyanathan, will be
presented on September 7. Prof. O. N. V. Kurup will release a
book, `Sangeetha Aswadanam', compiled by Mr. Madhu Vasudevan, the
same day.
The Culture Minister, Mr. G. Karthikeyan, will deliver the
valedictory address and present this year's Chembai award. The
Cooperation Minister, Mr. M. V. Raghavan, will preside over the
function, according to a press release.
