City art historian for UNESCO meet

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 1 Dr. Choodamani Nandagopal, a City-based art historian, has been selected to present a research paper on ``Medieval Indian temple architecture - synthesis and digression'' at the International Millennium Congress in Paris to be held from September 10 to 13.

The congress on ``More than two thousand years in the history of architecture: Safeguarding the structures of our architectural heritage'' has been organised by UNESCO and International Council on Monument Organising Sites (ICOMOS).

Dr. Choodamani is a Professor and Head of Academics in Chitrakala Institute of Advanced Studies. She is the only scholar invited from the South-East Asian Countries.

Dr. Choodamani is an advisor to many academic bodies and museums in the country and has the distinction of guiding many research projects within and outside the country. She has published over nine books and has 100 research papers to her credit.

She was earlier awarded U.K. Visiting Nehru Fellowship and UNESCO Hirayama Fellowship for Art History. She is the recipient of several international awards for her research work in the field of Pan-Asian art and culture.

``I am thrilled for having got this opportunity to present a paper in Paris. I will get to meet many historians who are working for the conservation and restoration of heritage monuments all over the World. I am looking for more challenges,'' Dr. Choodamani told The Hindu.

She said she had sent the synopsis for her research paper last year, after which she was asked to send a seven-page write-up with photographs.

The entire expenditure of her trip to Paris will be borne by the Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR), she added.
