CWC team reaches Mysore

MYSORE, SEPT. 1. A four-member expert committee of the Central Water Commission (CWC) arrived here on Saturday to study the situation in the Cauvery Basin.

The team will submit a report to the Union Government before the scheduled meeting of the monitoring committee on the implementation of the interim award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, which is to be held early this month.

The team, headed by the CWC Chief Engineer, Mr. Gopalakrishnan, visited the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya District and the Kabini Reservoir in H.D. Kote taluk of Mysore District on Saturday. It will visit the Harangi Reservoir in Kodagu District and the Hemavathy Reservoir in Hassan District on Sunday. Before arriving in Mysore, the team had apprised itself of the situation in Mettur. Mr. Gopalakrishnan declined to give details about the findings. He said: ``the team will look into certain technical aspects of the Cauvery reservoirs. We started with Mettur and will complete our visit to the KRS and the Kabini on Saturday, while the visit to the Harangi and the Hemavathy will be completed on Sunday.''

The other members of the team are Mr. Mathur, Director, Designs, Mr. R. K. Gupta, Director, Hydrology, and Mr. Chaitanyamurthy, Director, Inter-State Matters. Senior officials of the Mysore Irrigation Circle accompanied the Central team.

Water level: The water level in the KRS Reservoir on Saturday was 117.90 feet as against the maximum level of 124.80 feet (123.60 ft. on the same day last year). The inflow on Saturday was 6,223 cusecs (17,453 cusecs) and the outflow 721 cusecs, according to Irrigation Department officials.
