CPI(M) suspends MP

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 1. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today suspended Mr. Bratin Sengupta from its Parliamentary group for six months for violating party discipline by attending a dinner hosted by the Prime Minister for NDA MPs.

The action comes after an inquiry conducted by the party following media reports. The presence of the CPI(M) MP, Mr. Sengupta and the Independent MP, Mr. M.M. Agarwal, in the dinner surprised many.

The CPI(M) leader in Rajya Sabha, Mr. S. Ramachandran Pillai, said the party high command has sought an explanation from Mr. Sengupta, who ``admitted to have committed a serious mistake''.

Mr. Sengupta's recent behaviour was not in conformity with the norms expected from him and therefore, it was decided to suspend him from parliamentary group for six months, Mr. Pillai added. During this period, Mr. Sengupta would not enjoy the rights that a party member enjoys as per the CPI(M) constitution including the right to vote on party decisions.
