Boy killed in police firing
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, SEPT. 1. A young boy was killed and six persons were
injured when police opened fire at a procession taken out to
protest the failure of the Power Development Department to
restore power supply in Tappar village, Pattan, on the Srinagar-
Baramulla national highway. Reports said the villagers took to
the streets because the department did not repair the transformer
which had developed a technical snag. They marched to the highway
half a km away and assembled there with the intention of blocking
it.
However, police immediately swung into action, resorting to
lathicharge and using tear smoke shells. Later, they opened fire,
following which the boy, Shabir Ahmed Bhat, died on the spot. A
woman, Latifa, was injured. Five policemen were also injured in
their scuffle with the protesters.
PTI, UNI report:
Panic gripped Habbak, on Srinagar's outskirts, when militants
triggered a series of improvised explosive devices. However,
there were no casualties, official sources said.A top leader of
the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, was
arrested by police in Srinagar this afternoon. Mr. Aziz, also
chairman, People's League, was picked up when he was on his way
to see a relative at the SMHS hospital. He was detained at the
Karan Nagar police station.
