U.S. sanctions against Chinese, Pak. firms

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, SEPT. 1. In a major development, the United States has imposed missile proliferation sanctions against the China Metallurgical Equipment Company (CMEC), for shipment of missile parts and technology to Pakistan. Sanctions were also imposed on Pakistan's National Development Complex (NDC).

According to a State Department official, the sanctions were imposed on the CMEC for shipment of Category 2 items of the Missile Technology Control Regime to Pakistan's MTCR Class missile programme.

Washington has determined that despite denials and protests by China and Pakistan, ``substantial amounts'' of missile parts, technology and knowhow have been sold by Beijing to Islamabad in violation of a pact signed between the U.S. and China.
