JPC on stock scam to probe UTI fiasco
The tussle between the Government and the Opposition on the Unit Trust of India fiasco was resolved today when the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mr. G. M. C. Balayogi, announced that ``all issues relating to the UTI, including issues discussed in the House, will be considered by the Joint Parliamentary Committee'' already looking into the stock market scandal.

Ex-UTI chief denied bail
The former UTI chairman, Mr. P. S. Subramanyam, the mutual fund's suspended executive directors and stock broker, Mr. Rakesh Mehta, held on the charge of misappropriating Rs. 32 crores, were today remanded to judicial custody till August 7 by a special court which rejected their bail plea.

Bid on Amarnath pilgrims foiled
Security forces today foiled a major attempt by militants to target Amarnath pilgrims in Poonch district killing two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen ultras in a fierce encounter, a Defence spokesman said here.

Protests against NDA 'code of conduct'
The need for ``norms'' to help in the smooth functioning of the 24- party National Democratic Alliance suggested by the Bharatiya Janata Party president, Mr. Jana Krishnamurthi - and approved by the Prime Minister at the party's recent national executive committee meeting - are now to be adopted as a ``code of conduct'' by NDA members, but already protests are being heard that more than the ``other'' NDA members, it is the BJP which has been guilty of flouting the ``canons of coalition politics''.

Pak. preparing its own CBMs?
Is the military government in Pakistan planning to offer a package of its own Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to create a positive atmosphere for future talks with India?

 Mosque reconstruction defies solution
The vexed issue of reconstruction of the 16th century mosque which existed in the Sawai Bhoj temple complex here continues to defy solution a week after its demolition. Rumours are having a field day in the town and tension, accentuated by resentment against the Government, is again rising to a new level.

Plea against Jayalalithaa
Immediately after a Supreme Court ruling that convicted public servants should not hold office till their names were cleared, a petition was filed today seeking an order from the court to restrain Ms. Jayalalithaa from functioning as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Three more arrested
The Delhi police today arrested three more persons in connection with the killing of Phoolan Devi.

Concession to be optional
The senior citizens concession available on the Railways will be made optional with effect from September 1 this year.
