Shanmugham meets Sonia Gandhi

PONDICHERRY, AUG. 1. The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham,
called on the AICC president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, in New Delhi on
Tuesday.
A communication from the office of the Chief Minister today said
Mr. Shanmugham apprised Ms. Sonia Gandhi of the serious
implications of the Centrally-sponsored uniform sales tax in
Pondicherry.
He told her that merchants, political leaders and others were of
the unanimous stand that the uniform sales tax should be avoided
in Pondicherry.
The Chief Minister was scheduled to meet the Prime Minister, the
Home and the Finance Ministers to place before them the unanimous
views of the Union Territory.
Mr. Shanmugham was accompanied by the Chief Secretary, the
Principal Secretary and the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes
Department of Pondicherry.
