Srivastava, new CBDT chief

NEW DELHI, AUG. 1. Mr. O.P. Srivastava today assumed charge as
chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He takes
over from Mr. A. Balasubramanian, who has retired. A 1964 batch
officer of the Indian Revenue Service, he has served in various
capacities. As director-general, Income Tax (Investigation),
Mumbai, he is best remembered for supervising tax raids on
leading Bollywood stars. He then became the chief commissioner,
Income Tax (Delhi) and director-general (Administration) before
taking over as CBDT member last year. He also served in the
Department of Company affairs.
Mr. Srivastava takes over the reins at a time when a major
restructuring exercise is under way in the IT department. He said
he would work towards providing a tax-payer friendly system for
the assessees.
