Truck mishap toll up to 34
ROPAR (Punjab), JULY 26. With the recovery of 17 more bodies, the
toll in Monday's truck accident at Kiratpur Sahib, near here,
rose to 34 today.
Thirteen bodies were recovered from Anandpur Sahib hydel power
canal today while four were fished out last night, according to
the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. G. S. Grewal. Of the 13 bodies
recovered today, seven were fished out in the morning and six
this afternoon, he said.
Twenty-two people were rescued on the day of accident, while 17
bodies had been pulled out till last evening. The victims include
seven women and two children. Fourteen boats have been pressed
into service and rescue work is continuing round the clock, he
said. The ill-fated truck, carrying about 75 pilgrims, had fallen
into the canal while negotiating a curve.
