Raga exposition enhances concert
SANJAY SUBRAMANYAM gave a memorable performance for Triplicane
Rasika Samaj `Tyagaraja Yoga Vaibhavam' Anandabhairavi
(Dikshitar) was preceded by a brisk varnam.
The Anandabhairavi kirthana was soulfully rendered with gamakas.
Kedaragowla was brilliantly executed with all its majestic
sancharas followed by `Parakala' of Syama Sastri.
The delineation of the ragas was of high quality which enchanced
the concert's standard. Todi was splendid with imaginative
sancharas.
The directness of approach of the raga with all its ingredients
had a good elevation followed by `Kaddanuvariki' (Tyagaraja).
The neraval at `Paddu Thappaga' was impressive and of admirable
standard and the rich contribution of swaras was enjoyable.
Sanjay should, however, pay attention to diction and sahitya
suddha.
Sriram Kumar's renditions of Kedaragowla and Todi on the violin
were comprehensive. Veteran Srimushnam Raja Rao gave a brilliant
Tani with calculative laya patterns.
Singing for Music Education Trust, S. Rajagopalan started the
varnam (Saveri) briskly. Vallabha Nayaka (Dikshitar) was tidy
with a few kalpana swaras.
The Sri Raga Pancharatnam (Entharo) was sung with good diction of
Sahitya and swaras.
Evarani (Devamrithavarshini) and `Anupama Gunambudhi' (Atana)
both of Tyagaraja were handled with verve. Poorvikalyani was
pleasant followed by `Anandanatamaduvar' with neraval and swaras
at `Padhimadhijyothi'.
Rishabhapriya was comprehensive with some fine touches of the
raga moorchanas. `Mahatmule' of Mysore Vasudevachar', rarely
heard kriti was pleasantly sung. The neraval and swaras at
`Mahisutha manamohana' could have been rendered more effectively
so as to bring out the charm of the sahitya.
Sivagami gave a good Poorvikalyani on the violin. Arjun Bharathi
(mridangam) and Sadhyam Chandran (ganjira) played a good tani.
S. Rajagopalan, senior musician with deep knowledge, however,
surprised the listener by delineating Kalyani and render a
Poornachandrika kriti of Tyagaraja.
Thirupoondhuruthi Venkatesan gave a sumptuous feast of post
trinity krithis for Saraswati Vaggeyakara Trust on July 22.
He opened the concert with `Sidhivinayaka' of Harikesanallur
Muthiah Bhagavathar in Mohanakalyani. A heartwarming
Yadukulakambhodi raga was soulfully rendered followed by
`Ninnusevinchina' of Subbaraya Sastri.
Begada raga was comprehensive with lucid sancharas and
`Anudhinamu' of Ramnad Srinivasa Iyengar followed with neraval
and swaras at `Kanakanaruchira'.
The elaboration of Kalyani proved his proficiency in handling the
raga. `Nijadasa varada' of Patnam Subramanya Iyer and neraval at
`Inavamsajakula Venkatesa' with swaras was praiseworthy.
The vocalist has a robust vibrant voice which did not allow for
melodic expressions in some of the songs.
The other songs `Ambaparadevathe' in Rudhrapriya of Krishnaswami,
`Manasavratha' of Patnam Subramanya Iyer (Abhogi), `Bandhamu Jeya
Radhu' `Nagaswarali' of Muthiah Bhagavathar and `Janaki Ramana'
(Vanamamalai Jeeyar) in Kapi were pleasantly handled by the
vocalist. Thiruvallur Parthasarathi gave a good version of Begada
and Kalyani on the violin. Balashankar supported the vocalist
with his mridangam.
