Chaste flute recital
AN EXPANSIVE alapana in Khamboji for Muthuswamy Dikshitar's
``Maragadavalli'' and an equally evocative Keeravani alapana for
Patnam Subramanya Aiyar's ``Varamulasagi'' highlighted a chaste
flute recital by Mala Chandrasekhar under the auspices of Kartik
Fine Arts at R.R. Sabha. C. N. Chandrasekharan gave an added glow
with fine support on the violin. S. Balashankar (mridangam) and
Kartik (ghatam) figured in a vigorous tani avarthanam.
The other note-worthy songs played by Mala were Tyagaraja's
Bahudari kriti, ``Brovabarama'', Periasami Thooran's ``Taye
Tripura Sundari'' in Suddha Saveri and G. N. Balasubramaniam's
``Kamalacharane'' in Amritabehag.Earlier, Vaikkom T. V.
Jayachandran gave an impressive vocal recital. Tyagaraja's
``Kantajoodume'' in Vachaspati with sparkling swaras preceded a
detailed alapana in Thodi for ``Emijesithe''.
The Behag javali won wholesome praise. A mega support on the
violin was provided by Akkarai Subbulakashmi. Thiruvananthapuram
G. Balaji was the mridangist.
