Security in capital
Sir, - The murder of Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament, Ms.
Phoolan Devi, in the high security zone on Ashoka Road in New
Delhi raises serious questions about the security of VIPs,
especially in the context of threats from militants. We cannot
afford to relax security to leaders as we approach another
Independence Day.
V.Kannan,
New Delhi
* * *
Sir, - The life of Phoolan Devi spanning 38 years was a tragic
path strewn with tears and blood - tears shed by her as a
helpless victim of oppression and suppression, and blood shed by
many to make many wrongs right. When she surrendered, there were
55 cases against her, mainly cold blooded murder. It is sad that
a person's end should be so violent because her life could not be
shown as an example to posterity that repentance is nobler than
punishment.
U.S. Iyer,
Bangalore
