Meet on bone problems
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY 26. A two-day `Bone and Joint Decade Awareness
Conference' will be held here on July 28 and 29 to raise
awareness on the increasing burden of musculo-skeletal disorders
and to promote cost-effective prevention and treatment, Dr. T. K.
Shanmugasundaram, said.
Addressing mediapersons, he said annually 75 per cent of the
8,00,000 people who die around the world in road fatalities were
in developing countries. Most hip fractures were caused by
osteoporosis and it was predicted that the number of hip
fractures would rise from 1.7 million in 1990 to 6.3 million by
2050 unless aggressive preventive measures were started.
The conference aims at collecting data on aspects of bone and
joint problems. Over 26 papers would be presented.
Dr. R. Venkataswami, plastic and hand surgeon, said the
conference would be attended by people from different
specialities such as rheumatology, endocrinology, trauma
surgeons, general physicians treating osteoporosis and patient
empowerment groups.
