Tamaraikani joins DMK

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 15. The maverick former AIADMK MLA, Mr. R. Tamaraikani, joined the DMK in the presence of the party president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, here today.

Mr.Tamaraikani, who as an independent was defeated in last month's Assembly election by his son and AIADMK nominee, Mr. Inbathamizhan, in Srivilliputhur, was arrested recently in two cases after he had declared his intent to join the DMK. He was subsequently released on bail.

Mr. Tamaraikani presented a shawl to Mr. Karunanidhi and the DMK general secretary, Mr. K. Anbazhagan, when the two leaders emerged from a meeting with party functionaries from Tuticorin at the DMK headquarters.

Later, speaking to reporters, Mr. Tamaraikani said that though he continued to be an MGR loyalist, he had decided to join the DMK as the ``leaders of the MGR generation'' were no longer in the AIADMK.

``The DMK was also built by MGR and I now feel that I can serve the public through it.''

Karur violence condemned

Meanwhile, the DMK's woman's wing secretary, Mrs. M.I.Noorjehan Begum, condemned the violence allegedly indulged in by the AIADMK district panchayat members in Karur.

In a statement, she said it was deplorable that the district panchayat chairperson, Mrs. Lakshmi Duraisamy and the Vice- Chairperson, Mr. Umapathy (both of the DMK) were ordered to be arrested by the AIADMK Government, when action ought to have been taken against the AIADMK council members who had stormed the former's room and indulged in violent acts including damaging the portraits of C.N. Annadurai and Mr.Karunanidhi.
