Three in fray for Speaker post

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 9. With the PMC, a constituent of the NDA, headed by the DMK, also entering the fray, a contest has emerged for the Speaker post for the first time in the Union Territory. In all, three candidates have filed papers for the election to be held tomorrow: Mr. V. M. C. Sivakumar of DMK, Mr. D. Ramachandran of AIADMK and Mr. P. Rajavelu of PMC.

The name of Mr. Ramachandran was proposed by Mr. V. Vaithilingam, Mr. N. Rangaswamy (PWD Minister) and Mr. M. Chandrakasu (all belonging to the Congress), Mr. Djeacoumar (Local Administration Minister) of TMC and Mr. A. Kasilingam (Welfare Minister) of AIADMK. The name was seconded by Mr. E. Valsaraj, Mr. A. V. Subramanian (Tourism Minister) and Mr. R. Nalamaharajan (all belonging to the Congress), Mr. A. Namasivayam of TMC and Mr. A. Anbalagan of AIADMK.

Mr. Ramachandran was elected in the May 10 polls, after a gap of 11 years. Representing Mannadipet now, he had served as Chief Minister in 1980 and 1990.

The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, the PCC leader, Mr. V. Narayanaswamy and the two Independent members, Mr. Malladi Krishna Rao from Yanam and Mr. T. Jayamoorthy from Ariankuppam were also present when nominations were presented.

A set of nominations sponsoring Mr. Rajavelu were presented a few minutes before closing time today. Mr. K. Lakshminarayanan (PMC Legislature Party leader) and Mr. S. P. Sivakumar (DMK) proposed and seconded his name respectively.
