2 Independent MLAs to back NDA

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 9. Mr.Malladi Krishna Rao (elected from Yanam) and Mr.T.Jayamoorthy (from Ariankuppam), both Independents, today pledged support to the opposition NDA block comprising the DMK, PMC and BJP, in the Speaker election.

The two, who were present at a joint meeting of legislators of the NDA, told newsmen at the residence of the vice president of the DMK, Mr C. P. Tirunavukarasu, MP, that they were supporting the NDA.

Mr. V.M.C. Sivakumar, former Speaker and nominee of the Opposition in the Speaker election, told newsmen he had written letters to the Lt. Governor and also pro tem Speaker, Mr. A.V. Sridharan, insisting that voting at the poll should be through use of ballot papers.

The rules relating to the election of Speaker stipulated such a system when there were more than two contestants.
