Varma admits to borrowing from 'Vyasabharatham'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 9. Mr. M.R. Manohara Varma has admitted to borrowing heavily from C.V. Kunhiraman's celebrated work `Vyasabharatham', for preparing his book `Vyasabharatham Kuttikalkku'.

He made the admission in his reply to the advocate's notice issued to him in this connection by Mr. Hashim Rajan.

Mr. Varma said that he had a copy of the book without the cover and other relevant pages showing the name of the author, date of publication and other details. He was unable to realise whether there was a subsisting copyright for the book.

He stated that he now realised the mistake and as soon as the notice was received stopped further printing and sale of the book. As per the agreement with the publishers, M/s. Prabath Book House, only 2,000 copies were published. The royalty fixed was 15 per cent. The total copies sold were 1,212 and he had received Rs. 2,250 so far. He was prepared to pay that amount in full and final settlement of the issue. The remaining 788 copies were withdrawn from the stalls on receipt of the notice, he added.
