BJP's views also behind recall demand: DMK chief

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 9. The DMK president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, today said his party's general council resolution demanding the recall of the State Governor, Ms. Fathima Beevi, for swearing in Ms. Jayalalitha as Chief Minister despite her electoral disqualification ``basically also reflected the views of the senior BJP leaders, who had during their poll campaign said that someone convicted for three years and disqualified to contest cannot become Chief Minister.''

Mr. Karunanidhi was reacting to the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani's statement here yesterday that there was no question of the Centre either approving or disapproving the Governor's action, as the matter was before the Supreme Court. ``We are also awaiting the Court's verdict on this issue,'' the DMK chief said.

``Our (DMK's) high-command is here,'' quipped Mr. Karunanidhi, when reporters asked him about the BJP's State unit deciding to drop its resolution demanding the Governor's recall following the BJP's top-level leadership turning down the proposal.

Mr. Karunanidhi declined to comment on the TRC chief, Mr. Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthy's contention that he (Mr. Karunanidhi) could be questioned over the forest brigand Veerappan affair.

With regard to the DMK contesting the Speaker's post in Pondicherry, he said the decision was based on consultations with the NDA allies in the union territory.

Meanwhile, over 300 cadres including some office- bearers of the MDMK from Coimbatore district today joined the DMK in the presence of Mr. Karunanidhi.
