Baby sale case accused denied anticipatory bail

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA, JUNE 9. The First Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr. R.P.Budhihal, has rejected the anticipatory bail application of the founder chairperson of the John Abraham Memorial Bethany Home, Savitribai Puttaraju Samson, who is wanted by the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh police in connection with the alleged sale of female babies and violation of norms in giving them for adoption to foreigners.

In an order on Friday, the Judge observed that considering the gravity and seriousness of the alleged offence, which was more serious and heinous than the offence under Section 302, IPC (murder), she was not entitled to get anticipatory bail.

Upholding the plea of the prosecution, he said that if the accused was released on bail, she might abscond, influence the prosecution witnesses and continue the heinous act of sale of babies. He said that it was necessary for the investigating officer to get the relevant documents from the John Abraham Memorial Bethany Home and the St. Theresa's Tender Loving Care Centre to dig out the truth, and record the statements of the persons who were entrusted with the work to take care of the babies in the Home.

The Judge noted that 30 of the 344 babies in the Home had died and they were buried in its compound. The allegation that 162 children were given for adoption to foreigners, 78 to Indians, and eight to non-resident Indians should be looked into.

He also rejected the regular bail applications filed by Sudharshan and Varaprasad, who were working for the organisation at Tandur and in Hyderabad. They were arrested by the Karnataka Police and have been lodged in the Gulbarga Central Prison.
