39.28 p.c. of II PU students pass exam.

BANGALORE, JUNE 9. Of the 3,94,201 students who appeared for the
second-year Pre-University Examination of April 2001, 1,54,840
have passed, a pass percentage of 39.28, which is 7.20 per cent
lower than last year's figure. As expected, girls fared better
than boys.
The results were declared at 4 p.m. today in all the colleges
teaching pre-university courses in the State. The results have
also been posted on a few websites.
Of the 2,79,451 students, including 1,21,956 girls, who appeared
for the examination for the first time, 1,30,844 students,
including 66,245 girls, passed. Among the repeaters - 1,02,250
students, including 29,298 girls - 21,193, including 7,099 girls,
passed.
As many as 12,500 students, of whom 3,807 were girls, appeared
for the examination as private candidates, and 2,803 of them,
including 964 girls, passed.
Dakshina Kannada District topped the list with a pass percentage
of 70.73, while Gulbarga District was at the bottom with 21.21
per cent. Of the students who took the Commerce combination,
52.89 per cent passed, followed by Science (46.95 per cent) and
Arts (32.59 per cent).
While 15,339 students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, out of
the 58,865 who appeared, passed (26.06 per cent), 4,215 Scheduled
Tribe students, of the 16,144 who appeared, passed (26.12 per
cent).
Bijapur District had the largest number of examination
malpractices detected with 379 cases, followed by Gulbarga (352),
Bidar (252), Belgaum (145), Bagalkot (132) and Dharwad (86).
Chikmagalur and Udupi districts each reported one case of
malpractice.
Mr. B.S. Ramaprasad, Director, Pre-University Education, told
presspersons that the pass certificates and the marks card-cum-
application forms of the failed students would be sent to the
colleges within a few days. He said application forms for re-
totaling were available in the respective colleges. Candidates
who wanted to have their marks re-totaled should send their
applications to the Director, Pre-University Education, Palace
Road, Bangalore 560 001. The last date for submitting
applications was June 23, and the fee per answer paper/subject
was Rs. 100. He said photocopies of valued answer papers could be
obtained for the following subjects: English, Accountancy,
Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology (Part I and
Part II), Electronics, Computer Science and Business Mathematics.
Applications for photocopies should be submitted by June 23 and
the fee for each answer paper was Rs. 200.
Applications for revaluation (Rs. 500 per answer paper) should
also be submitted by June 23, he said.
October exam: Fees and applications for the October 2001
examination can be submitted by July 7 (without penal fee), by
July 17 (with a penal fee of Rs. 10 per day up to a maximum of
Rs. 100), and by August 6 (with a special penal fee of Rs. 20 per
day up to a maximum of Rs.400 and a penal fee of Rs. 100). The
Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Mr. H. Vishwanath,
told presspersons that students had not been ranked as the
Government had done away with the ranking system as a matter of
policy.
