Sena may urge SC to stay proceedings
By Mahesh Vijapurkar
MUMBAI, JUNE 9. The Shiv Sena may urge the Supreme Court in the
next few days to stay all proceedings against its activists,
including its leader, Mr. Bal Thackeray, on the basis of the
findings of the Srikrishna Commission.
Party sources feel that unless this was done, the cases against
the former Police Commissioner, Mr. R.D. Tyagi, and Mr. Gajanan
Kirtikar, Sena's then Home Minister, taken up now, would lead to
a situation where the cadre will be disenchanted. Hence the need
for the party to protect itself.
The Supreme Court sought affidavits from the Maharashtra
Government and the latter began taking steps. It first came out
with an FIR against Mr. Tyagi and then a chargesheet against Mr.
Kirtikar. Mr. Kirtikar is now attending court on summons after
the Special Task Force became active and Mr. Tyagi's possible
arrest is stayed, pending his petition for anticipatory bail in
the High Court.
