Sonia's letter a gimmick, says BJP
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUNE 9. The Bharatiya Janata Party today described the
Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi's letter to the Prime
Minister on issuing a fresh notification after correcting
technical deficiencies in the Babri Masjid demolition case as a
`political gimmick'.
In an informal interaction with correspondents here, senior BJP
leader, Mr. J.P. Mathur, said the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh
Government were competent to take proper decision. Mr. Mathur
said he saw no need for a fresh notification since it was well
known that the three Union Ministers - Mr L.K. Advani, Dr. Murli
Manohar Joshi and Ms. Uma Bharti - were not party to any
`conspiracy'.
Mr. Mathur said the case was filed against the leaders with the
intention to malign them. He argued that issuing a fresh
notification would mean that both the party and BJP-led
Government also held these leaders responsible.
Ms. Gandhi had written a letter to Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee on
Friday urging him to initiate steps to remove the shortcomings in
the earlier notification of 1993.
