'Indo-Pak. talks will give Musharraf legitimacy'

NEW DELHI, JUNE 9. The senior Congress leader, Mr. Vasant Sathe, today said that India could offer to ascertain the opinion of the people of Kashmir if Pakistan followed the letters of the U.N. resolution.

``The U.N. resolution specifies that all aggression called by whatever name must be vacated and the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir including Pak-occupied Kashmir, brought under India's administrative control to restore normalcy before the opinion of the people can be sought,'' Mr. Sathe, a former Union Minister, told a discussion organised by the All India Small and Medium Newspapers' Federation.

The former Uttar Pradesh Governor, Mr. Romesh Bhandari, said Mr. Vajpayee's offer of talks would ``only give legitimacy to Gen. Musharraf''. The former Election Commissioner Mr. G.V.G Krishnamurthy also questioned the Government's invitation to Gen. Musharraf.

Senior journalist, Mr. Kuldip Nayar, said the talks would have had more legitimacy had there been some political participation from Pakistan.
