One killed in border firing
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, JUNE 9. For the first time after the ceasefire was
withdrawn, the line of control (LoC) and the international border
(IB) witnessed unprovoked shelling and firing from the Pakistani
side, officials said.
Pakistani troops resorted to heavy firing on Ranipost in Manjakot
area of Rajouri yesterday night. One Army jawan was killed and
another injured. The Army jawans returned fire and the exchange
continued for sometime. Today, one civilian was injured in Arnia
sector of R.S. Pura in Jammu when the troops from across the
border resorted to heavy firing. The firing was returned from
this side.
Trilateral ceasefire
The senior separatist leader and chief of Mahaz-e-Azadi, Mr. Azam
Inquillabi, today urged for a trilateral ceasefire in Kashmir.
All the three parties - India, Pakistan and militant groups -
should announce a ceasefire for fruitful talks, he told
mediapersons today. Mr. Inquillabi said the Centre should talk
to the separatist leaders. ``The movement is in the hands of
senior separatists and it will be then transferred to the younger
generation,'' he said.
Mr. Inquillabi who faced criticism for meeting the Centre's
interlocutor, Mr. K.C.Pant, during the latter's visit to Kashmir,
said, ``In principle I had decided not to meet him, but when the
high-level summit was announced I thought that it would help in a
meaningful dialogue.''
Army denies report
JAMMU, JUNE 9. The Army has denied reports that Pakistan
attempted to capture an Indian post in Nowshera sector of Poonch
district on Friday, saying there had been no such attack on any
of the Indian posts.
Media centre at the 16th Nagrota Corps said today the news
regarding the Pakistan troops' attempt was ``totally devoid of
truth, baseless and misleading.''
