dated June 5, 1951: Protection of cows
Parliament on June 4, took up the Food Minister's motion to refer
the Bill to promote ``Gosamvardhan'' to a Select Committee. The
main features of the Bill were the setting up of a Central
Council, registration of ``Goshalas'' and the levy of a certain
cess in the sale of bovine cattle in order to have ``Gosadans.''
High-level mix-up
The American State Department said in Washington that owing to a
delivery mix-up, the Persian Prime Minister, Mohammed Mossadeq,
was sent a letter on the Persian oil dispute which the President,
Mr. Truman, had intended for the British Prime Minister.
The State Department confirmed the error in response to radio
reports from Teheran. But, no further details were given.
Nehru's address to troops
Addressing the members of the Indian Army in Srinagar on June 3,
the Prime Minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, said the Kashmir
question had acquired vital importance and the eyes of the world
had turned on it. It, therefore, behoved on all Kashmiris as also
the other people having relations with Kashmir to fulfill whole-
heartedly the special responsibilities cast on them.
Everything, the Prime Minister added, would depend on how the
Kashmiris served the country and defended it. In fact, it was
everybody's duty whether in the Army or outside, to carry out his
work. Of course, men in the militia had to do more than
others.Ultimately, Mr. Nehru said, the future of Kashmir had to
be decided by the Kashmiris themselves. If the people of Jammu
and Kashmir served their country well, they would all prosper.
Beatification of Pius X
The beatification of the present Pope Pius X, who died of a
broken heart a few days after World War I broke out, was held in
Vatican City on June 3. Fifty thousand pilgrims from all over the
world attended the ceremony.
Pius X was born in the village of Ricse, in Venice province, on
June 2, 1835. His original name was Giuseppo Sarto.
