Fathima Beevi, Jayalalitha extend Meelad greetings

CHENNAI, JUNE 4. Led by the Governor, Ms. Fathima Beevi, and the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalitha, a host of leaders have conveyed their greetings to the Muslim community on the occasion of Meelad-un-Nabi.

In her message, the Governor said ``Prophet Mohammed preached brotherhood and love. On his birthday, let us reaffirm our faith in His teachings and live in mutual understanding and promote peace and harmony.''

The Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalitha, said the day should be celebrated by affirming the values of tolerance and harmony, and non-violence as the path to peace. The Prophet had highlighted that love and brotherhood should transcend barriers of language and religion.

The DMK president and former Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, said the Prophet's sayings were of universal value. ``In tune with what he preached, let us all forget our differences and show love towards one another.''

Mr. G.K. Moopanar, TMC president, said the values of brotherhood, humanism and compassion should be promoted on the occasion of the Prophet's birthday.

The PMK founder, Dr. S. Ramadoss, said the Prophet practised in his life what he preached.

The TNCC chief, Mr. E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said his party's basic philosophy of communal harmony formed part of the Prophet's concept of humanism. The Congress would continue to safeguard the interests of the Muslims.

Mr. Vaiko, MDMK general secretary, urged the people to strive to promote brotherhood and communal harmony. The INL State president, Mr. M.A. Latheef, said Meelad-un-Nabi should be observed as a day of humanism and communal harmony.

Among those who extended their wishes were Mr. S. Thirunavukarasu, MGR ADMK leader, Dr. K. Krishnasamy, president of the Puthiya Tamilagam, and Mr. S. Sheikh Dawood, president of the Tamil Maanila Muslim League, and Mr. A. Akram Khan, president, Islamia Jananayaka Party.
