Hanle, Hoskote satellite link inaugurated
BANGALORE, JUNE 4. Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu
and Kashmir, inaugurated the satellite communication link between
Hanle and Hoskote at Hanle near Ladakh on Saturday.
Simultaneously, the link from Hoskote to Hanle was inaugurated by
Prof. B.V. Sreekantan, Chairman, Governing Council of the Indian
Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), at Hoskote near Bangalore. The
total cost of setting up the facility at Hanle and Hoskote was
Rs. 40 crore.
Astrophysicists can operate the telescope at Hanle remotely from
the remote link set up at the Centre for Research and Education
in Science and Technology (CREST), which is coming up at Hoskote.
The data available in the observatory can also be accessed by
anyone in the world through the Internet.
Hanle is pollution-free and has a stable atmosphere throughout
the year, which will enable clear viewing through the telescope.
The two-metre optical infrared telescope has been set up on Mount
Saraswati at an altitude of 4,500m.
