Immortal story of time

KAUSALYA SRINIVASAN, Akshara Matric. HS. School, Madurai.

History helps students understand the present with reference to the past. This inculcates in them a sense of history which is the ordering of the environment in terms of time. One could perhaps start with the diversity that one sees in India - the diverse religions, languages and customs.

In history, it is society and not the individual that is important. Therefore, all individual actions need to be evaluated in terms of their impact on society.

Men are mortals but society is immortal - "men may come and men may go..." but their actions leave an imprint in time, liable for evaluation by posterity.

This social context is what history instils in us and makes us responsible individuals in society. The selfishness and violence rampant in the present-day world stems from the lack of this understanding.
