One match suspension for Slater

KOLKATA, MARCH 9. Australian opener Michael Slater was handed a one- match suspension on Friday for his statements on the issue involving a catch he took of Rahul Dravid during the Mumbai Test.

Match Referee, Mr. Cammie Smith, who had let off Slater with a warning initially, took strong exception to the interview Slater granted to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on the subject. Communicating his decision to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya, the Match Referee slapped a six-month suspended suspension and fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching the code of conduct.

Slater had been involved in a verbal duel with umpire, Mr. S. Venkataraghavan after the latter sought the help of the third umpire, Mr. Narendra Menon to judge if the catch had been taken cleanly. When the decision went against him, Slater was seen exchanging words with the Indian vice-captain, who had rightly stood his ground, waiting for the third umpire to give his ruling. The Australian, who chose to ignore the warning of the Match Referee, was ultimately penalised for commenting on the Australian radio.
