Jetty equals meet record

CHENNAI, MARCH 9. Kottayam division's Jetty C. Joseph provided the lone bright spot on the opening day when she equalled Leka Thomas' meet record of 6.03 mts in the long jump event of the 34th LIC all India athletic meet at the Nehru stadium on Friday.

A higher grade assistant, Jetty, who had represented the country in the Singapore Asian junior championship in 1999, achieved her best jump in the third attempt.

Else low-key performances marked the day with international Gurmeet Kaur helping herself to a double - javelin and shot put. At the end of the day, South zone was leading in the men's section and South central in the women's.

Earlier the meet was inaugurated by Mr G.N. Bajpai, Chairman, LIC and National Stock Exchange. The All India Insurance Employees Association felicitated the participants in the evening.
