AIADMK takes out rallies against Union budget

CHENNAI, MARCH 9. The AIADMK cadres held demonstration near the
Egmore railway station today as part of a Statewide agitation in
protest against the ``anti-people'' proposals in the Union
budget.
The members raised slogans against the BJP Government and charged
that the budget was ``anti-poor''. Ms. Visalakshi Nedunchezhian,
organising secretary, led the demonstration in which several
former Ministers participated.
Madurai
Demonstrations were organised by party functionaries in the
district headquarters of Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Theni
and Dindigul also.
In Madurai Mr. V.N. Rajangam and Mr. Durairaj, secretaries of the
party's district urban and rural units respectively, led the
agitation. Participants, numbering around 1,200, criticised the
budget for having ``disappointed the Backward communities and the
working class''.
In Theni district, about 500 party cadres participated in the
stir, led by Mr. T.T.V. Dinakaran, MP. In Sivaganga district
nearly 800 party cadres, including 80 women, took part in the
agitation led by Mr. Vinayagamoorthy, the district unit
organising secretary. In Virudhunagar district, 500 party cadres,
led by district secretary, Mr. Selvam, took part in the protest.
Tiruchi
A large number of AIADMK men took out protest rallies in Tiruchi,
Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts condemning the Union
budget proposals.
In Tiruchi, the party women's wing secretary, Mrs. Sulochana
Sampath, led a rally from Chinthamani to the Telephone Exchange
on West Boulevard Road, where the participants staged a
demonstration. Similar agitations were organised in Perambalur,
Pudukottai and Karur districts also.
Thanjavur
The AIADMK's election wing secretary, Mr. Durai Govindarajan,
presided over a protest rally in Thanjavur and staged a
demonstration in front of the head post office today.
Mr. Rama Ramanathan, Mr. K.Thangamuthu, former MLAs, Mr.
Rangaswamy and Mr. Karthikeyan, district secretaries,
participated in the demonstration. Similar processions were taken
out in Kumbakonam and Pattukottai also.
Tirunelveli
Mr. P.H. Pandian, MP and leader of the AIADMK in Parliament, came
down heavily on the DMK Government and its Union Ministers for
announcing various schemes without allocating funds.
Addressing party workers during the demonstration in front of the
railway junction, Mr. Pandian said foundation was laid for a High
Court Bench in Madurai some months ago, in the presence of the
Chief Minister and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. But,
no funds have been earmarked for the project so far.
Similarly, the Government and DMK Ministers had announced the
setting up a hi-tech park and special economic zone in Nanguneri,
and announced a mega project to clean the Tamirabarani river.
Funds have not been allotted for both the schemes too. He also
dubbed the resignation of Mr. Mullaiventhan as an eyewash.
Mr. Nagoor Meeran, former Minister, Mr. C. Karuppusamy, MLA, and
Mrs. Vasanthi Murugesan, urban district secretary, also
participated.
Ramanathapuram
Mr. K. Malaisamy, MP, led the demonstration in front of taluk
office here against the ``anti- people budget'' of the Central
Government. Earlier, they took out a rally from the palace to
taluk office.
Mr. Niraikulathan, MP, Mr. Muniyasamy, district secretary, Mr. C.
Murugesan, joint-secretary, Mr. K. Velu, town secretary, and Mr.
Rajendaran, participated.
Tuticorin
Over 800 AIADMK activists participated in the agitation in front
of the telegraph office here. The organising secretary, Mr. V.
Balakrishnan, Mr. S.P. Shanmuganathan, and Mr. N.K. Perumal,
participated in the rally taken out from the Cruz Fernandes
statue on Palayamkottai road.
Nagercoil
The members of the Kanyakumari district unit of the AIADMK staged
a demonstration in front of the Post Office at the Tower
Junction. The stir was presided over by Mr. Thalavai Sundaram,
MP, and led by Mr. Patchaimal, district secretary.
Coimbatore
About 800 AIADMK men, including about 100 women, participated in
a rally and demonstration against the union budget on Friday.
Starting from Thernilai Thidal, the rally culminated at the
Collectorate, where a demonstration was held. Mr. K.P. Munuswamy,
state organising secretary, led the demonstration.
Salem
A large number of the AIADMK men took out a procession from the
Anna statue to head post office, where they staged a
demonstration decrying the union budget.
The agitation was held under the presidentship of Ms.
Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy, State organising secretary, in which
the party functionaries Mr. S.E. Venkatachalam, Mr. Murugesan and
Mr. Semmalai participated.
Erode
The Erode North district secretary, Mr. K.K. Kaliappan, MP, led
the demonstration in front of the collectorate on Friday. Mr.
P.C. Ramasamy also participated.
Pondicherry
A large number of AIADMK volunteers, functionaries and
legislators took part in a demonstration at the head post office
in protest against the `anti-poor proposals in the Union budget.
The Pondicherry unit secretary, Mr. A. Ravindran, Mr.
Pulamalaipithan, Mr. K. Natarajan and Mrs. S. Arasi participated
in the stir.
