Maran meets PM, Cong. gets busy
The President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, today accepted the resignations of the two PMK Ministers, Mr. N. T. Shanmugam, Minister of State (independent charge) for Coal, and Mr. E. Ponnuswamy, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, from the Council of Ministers.

 'LCA production requires tie-ups'
Expressing happiness over Russia's reported desire to participate in the serial production of the Light Combat Aircraft, the Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, today said cost-effective and economically viable production of the LCA demanded link-ups with other countries.

Bengal Cong. MLAs' ultimatum to Sonia
The Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, has a week's time to give the go-ahead to her party in West Bengal to form a mahajot or grand alliance, in the coming Assembly elections, with the Trinamool Congress headed by the Railway Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, who has an ally in the Bharatiya Janata Party - the Congress' ideological foe.

Lashkar behind Sikhs' killing
The Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba was responsible for gunning down six Sikhs in Srinagar on Saturday last, it has now been established authoritatively.

'Pak. polls next year'
Pakistan's military regime, headed by Gen. Pervez Musharraf, today promised the Supreme Court that it would hold parliamentary polls before October 12, 2002, as ordered by the court.

Reconvene Manipur House : Governor
The Manipur Governor, Mr. Ved Prakash Marwah, today warned of ``serious consequences'' if the State Assembly session was not reconvened immediately to discuss the pending no- confidence motion against the ruling United Legislative Front (ULF), Raj Bhavan sources said.

 Barak suffers humiliating defeat
Mr. Ehud Barak suffered a humiliating defeat in the special Prime Ministerial election held in Israel on Tuesday, losing to his sole rival, Mr. Ariel Sharon, leader of the Likud party, by a 60- 40 margin.

PM heads panel
The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, today constituted a committee headed by him to deliberate on necessary institutional and legislative measures needed for an effective and long-term strategy to deal with national calamities.

Navy divers pull out
The team of nine Navy divers today packed up their equipment and left Dhanbad after three days of fruitless search for the 37 miners entombed in the Bagdihi Colliery for 114 hours now.

Gunman shot at outside White House
Police shot and wounded a gunman outside the White House, today. The Secret Service, after preliminary investigations, maintained that he did not fire from his weapon, but eye-witnesses said two to three rounds were fired by him.
