Call to follow traffic rules
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JAN. 6. Speakers at a Road Safety Week meeting held
here on Friday stressed the need for adhering to traffic rules.
Talking about road safety, Mr. T. V. Antony, Member, State
Planning Commission said the pavements were meant for the
pedestrians but they were used for every purpose other than what
it was meant for. It was the responsibility of every citizen to
protect the pavements, he said and called for an awareness on the
issue.
When the family planning programme was launched two decades ago
many said it would not work well. This was proved wrong and
recently the State received an award from the Centre for
implementing the programme successfully.
Carelessness of drivers was the main cause for 90 per cent of the
accidents in the State, said Mr. P.R. Sampath, Joint Transport
Commissioner (Road Safety).
A video on road rules should be played for those who come to the
Regional Transport Offices for taking their driving license,
suggested Mr. V. Narayanan, Founder of INODA. The organisation
had also taken up the work of painting the speed breakers in the
city for the benefit of road users, he added.
The programme was organised by the Regional Transport Office
South, Mr. M.K. Subramanian, secretary, AASI, Mr. C.Periasamy,
president, Tamil Nadu Tourist Cab Owners Association, Mr. Lalgudi
Narayanan, general secretary, Chennai Tourist Taxi Owners
Association and Mr. M.P. Natarajan, RTO South were among those
who participated.
