Check ISI activities in NE, says BJP
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 6. The BJP has urged the Centre to take measures
to check the activities of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence
(ISI) in the North-East and warned that the region would
otherwise turn into another `hotbed of terrorism and separatism'.
The party national executive, which ended on Friday, in its
resolution on the North-East situation, expressed concern over
the spurt in terrorist and separatist violence in Assam, Manipur,
Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
The continuation of violence and ``virtual abdication of
authority by some State Governments'' had resulted in the loss of
innocent lives. It suggested the setting up of a special
commission to unearth links between some politicians and
separatist/banned organisations following reports that such links
resulted in diversion of funds meant for development in the
region.
The Government must issue multi-purpose identity cards to all
citizens, especially those in the border areas and scrap the
Illegal Migrants Determination by Tribunal Act to check the
``continuous flow of illegal immigrants'' from Bangladesh.
In Assam, where the Assembly elections were due later this year,
steps should be taken to check the activities of Surrendered
United Liberation Front of Asom (SULFA) cadres who, it charged,
were terrorising voters and indulged in extortion.
In the backdrop of the sudden upsurge in killings of non-Assamese
in the State during the last few months, the party asked the
Centre to thwart the ``conspiracy of the ISI and the ULFA to
divide society'' and to drive out the non-locals.
Incidentally, the resolution made no mention of Mizoram except
for asking the Centre to rehabilitate the Reang refugees who were
driven out of the State. The BJP vice-president, Mr. K. Jana
Krishnamurthy, said the party would observe the birth centenary
celebrations of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee by asking its local
committees in metropolitan areas and cities to adopt a girl child
from the poorest family and provide education.
The party would observe February 2 (birth anniversary of Sant
Ravi Das) and April 14 (birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar)
as `social harmony day'.
Meetings would be arranged for party workers and public on
national integration and unity between February and July this
year.
