Vajpayee announces ceasefire in J&K
The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, today
announced unilateral ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir during the
holy month of `Ramadan' which begins towards the month-end.
Pak. refuses comment
Pakistan tonight declined to comment on the
announcement of ceasefire in Kashmir against militant groups made
by the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, on the ground that it
would like to wait for the exact details of the announcement.
STF operations will begin at once: Kharge
The Karnataka Home Minister, Mr. Mallikarjun
Kharge, today declared that the Special Task Force, which had
suspended operations immediately after the abduction of the
Kannada thespian, Mr. Rajkumar, would resume operations in the MM
Hill areas immediately in an attempt to nab the brigand
Krishna to meet Opposition
The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr. S. M.
Krishna, today said he would discuss with Opposition leaders
issues relating to the forest brigand Veerappan, here tomorrow.
Kerosene, LPG to cost less in partial rollback
The Government today announced a partial
rollback in the price of kerosene by one rupee a litre and LPG
(cooking gas) by Rs. 10 a cylinder in deference to the demands by
the allies led by the Trinamool Congress.
Slanging match as Bush, Gore await verdict
With the Florida Supreme Court scheduled to
hear oral arguments tomorrow, the Bush and Gore campaign rhetoric
has risen to new levels and the two sides are bracing for the
next stage of the U.S. Presidential election counting process.
Maruti: no decision yet
The Government has not yet taken any decision
to disinvest its holding in the auto joint venture Maruti Udyog
Limited and the issue will come up for discussion at the December
meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Disinvestment, the Heavy
Industries Minister, Mr. Manohar Joshi, said here today.
Peace prize for scientist
The President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, today
conferred the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace,
Disarmament and Development for 1999, on the eminent agriculture
scientist, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, for his outstanding
contribution in the field of plant genetics and ensuring food
security to millions of people in the developing world.
Opposition to focus on economic issues
With the Opposition planning to launch a
coordinated attack on the NDA Government's policies especially in
the economic sector, the month-long winter session of Parliament
which opens here tomorrow can be expected to be stormy.
