Soren pulls out, swears to become CM
Having snapped ties with the National
Democratic Alliance after it turned down support to form a
government in the new Jharkhand State, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha
(Soren) today asserted the party would come to power with the
backing of non- NDA parties.
Uma Bharti back in Cabinet
The Vajpayee Council of Ministers will be
further expanded tomorrow, with the inclusion of at least three
Ministers. There will also be a minor reshuffle of portfolios, as
well as a Cabinet-rank promotion for Mr. Arun Jaitely.
Choice narrows down to Marandi
With just two more days left for the formation
of Uttaranchal, the race for the Chief Minister seems to have
narrowed down to one of the MLAs or MLCs of the new State, and in
Jharkhand the choice is expected to be Mr. Babulal Marandi who
has been asked by the Prime Minister to resign from his position
as Minister of State in the Union Council of Ministers.
Major changes sought in law on arrest
The Law Commission has suggested sweeping
changes in the law governing arrest to prevent the abuse and
misuse of the power of arrest by the law enforcing agencies.

Vehicles, exam centre torched
A government building was gutted and an
examination hall of Manipur University and two government
vehicles were torched at different places in Manipur ahead of a
bandh called from midnight tonight to protest the killings of 10
persons in the crossfire during an encounter between insurgents
and security forces.
200 killed in road crash
About 200 people were killed when a petrol tanker
