Governors 'chosen' for three new States
The Vajpayee Government is learnt to have cleared three names for appointments as Governors to the new States of Chattisgarh, Uttaranchal and Jharkhand, scheduled to come into existence next month.

Chhattisgarh HC at Bilaspur
The Government has issued a Presidential notification to the effect that the High Court of Chhattisgarh State, to be formed on November 1, would be situated at Bilaspur.

 Basu stepping down as CM next week
Barely a week after successfully orchestrating the sweeping reforms in the CPI(M), Mr. Jyoti Basu, founder- member of the party's politburo, announced today his plans to relinquish the office of Chief Minister of West Bengal in the first week of November.

Shabir Shah arrested
As most parts of Kashmir Valley observed a general strike called by the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, Mr. Shabir Shah, the president of the Democratic Freedom Party, was arrested today along with 15 supporters from the City.

Cong. elections: last date for filing papers put off again
The last date for filing nominations to the Congress president's post has been postponed yet again. The chairman of the Central Election Authority of the party, Mr. Ram Niwas Mirdha, announced this evening that he had extended the deadline by a day.

2 Thais shot dead
An Indian Navy patrol opened fire on a Thai fishing boat in the Andaman Sea earlier this month, killing two Thais, Thailand's Foreign Ministry said today.
