 Rajnath Singh to replace Gupta
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Ram Prakash Gupta, yet to complete one year in office, will step down tomorrow and the BJP legislature party will elect a new leader. The Union Surface Transport Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh, will be his successor according to the BJP State chief, Mr. Kalraj Mishra.

Barak seeks to form emergency Govt.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Ehud Barak, and the hawkish right-wing leader, Mr. Ariel Sharon, are trying hard to form an emergency Government amid more bloodshed and increased tension in West Asia.

U.S. forces on alert in W. Asia
The United States military has been put on high alert in parts of West Asia because of indications of terrorist threats.

India is determined to defeat Pakistan in the proxy war it has unleashed in Kashmir and the situation in the valley is fast returning to normalcy, the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, asserted here today.

 Sardinha quits, BJP Govt. installed in Goa
The BJP today assumed the reins of power for the first time in Goa heading a coalition government with Mr. Manohar Parrikar sworn in as the Chief Minister after the beleaguered Mr. Francisco Sardinha bowed out of office without facing a confidence vote in the State Assembly.

Passport revoked
The Indian High Commission in Thailand has revoked the passport of underworld don Chhota Rajan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Chhagan Bhujbal, has said.

Satellite phone
All border posts would be provided with satellite phones to help service personnel maintain contact with family members, the Union Communications Minister, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, said here today.

Ninety-four serial blast accused, including film star Sanjay Dutt, have been exempted from appearance before a designated TADA court here until November 5.

Mi-24 wreckage, bodies found
Navy divers today recovered bodies of three crew members of the Mi-24 helicopter shot down by the LTTE in Trincomalee on Monday. The wreckage of the helicopter was also recovered.
