The Centre has shown ``no interest'' in the
Hurriyat Conference's latest proposal for two-track talks with
India and Pakistan. In the Centre's judgment, this is the ``same
old line'' that the Hurriyat has been hawking around for some
time, and which the Vajpayee Government has found unacceptable

Panel to probe Kumaramangalam treatment
While there was no change in the condition of
the Union Power Minister, Mr. Rangarajan Kumaramangalam, who
continued to be critical today, the Union Health Ministry began
the process of putting together a high-level committee to probe
the alleged lapses on the part of Apollo Hospitals, where he had
undergone treatment earlier.
Deadline ends, Gopal receives signal
After a two-day wait in the forests, the
journalist-emissary, Mr. R.R. Gopal, received signals from the
fugitive-bandit Veerappan this evening. He is likely to meet
Veerappan late Saturday night or early Sunday and resume
negotiations for the release of the abducted actor, Mr. Rajkumar,

Another oil price hike imminent
An increase in oil product prices is imminent
unless the Finance Ministry agrees to cut customs duty on oil
imports. The soaring international oil prices will lead to an
upsurge in revenue collections but the Petroleum Ministry has
urged that this bonanza be given up to save the consumer from a
painful price hike.
'Survival time for submarine crew over'
The sailors trapped inside a crippled Russian
submarine may all be dead by now, a top naval official said after
seven days of futile efforts to rescue the 118 crew members.
``Our worst fears appear to have come true,'' Admiral Mikhail
Motsak, chief of staff of the Northern Fleet told Russian
television. ``Absence of any information from the submarine leads
us to conclude that the critical survival time for the crew is
35 bodies fished out
The bodies of 35 persons, including
those of seven women and a child, were fished out today from the
river Banas, in which a private bus carrying more than 60
passengers was swept away yesterday.
Fodder scam: houses raided
The CBI has detected assets worth over Rs. 2
crores during simultaneous searches conducted by its sleuths
yesterday at residential and business premises of the former
Bihar Animal Husbandry Department officials, Dr. Ramraj Ram and
Mr. Birsa Oraon, at Patna, Aurangabad and Ranchi.
