 Jethmalani's statement spares Prime Minister
The former Law Minister, Mr. Ram Jethmalani, finally got a chance to read out a statement in the Rajya Sabha, detailing the circumstances leading his resignation from the Union Council of Ministers. But much to the treasury benches' relief and to the Opposition's disappointment, the former Law Minister failed to create any kind of fireworks.

His precepts and practices
The former Law Minister, Mr. Ram Jethmalani, appears to have propounded a doctrine of non-confidentiality of confidential documents.

Yatris attacked, 25 killed
Twentyfive persons, a number of them yatris, were killed and over 30 injured when militants attacked a ``langar'' in a Pahalgam health resort en route to the Amarnath cave this evening. Two militants were also killed when security forces ambushed them. Curfew has been imposed in Pahalgam.

 Lt. Gen. Padmanabhan, new Army Chief
Lt. Gen. Sundararajan Padmanabhan will be the next Chief of the Army Staff replacing Gen. V.P Malik, who retires on September 30.

Gopal leaves on mission to meet Veerappan
The information from Chennai that Mr. R. R. Gopal, editor of the Tamil bi-weekly, Nakkeeran, had left on his mission to secure the release of the Kannada matinee idol, Mr. Rajkumar, and three others from the clutches of the forest brigand, Veerappan, was received with relief by the State Government.

Rajnikanth, others offer to mediate
Prominent film stars of the tinsel world including the Tamil superstar, Mr. Rajnikanth, have offered to meet the sandalwood smuggler, Veerappan, to secure the release of Kannada matinee idol, Mr. Rajkumar, and three others who had been kidnapped by the bandit from Gajanur on July 30.

 India, Nepal to discuss security
India and Nepal today held a major brainstorming session to address threats to their security and ways to orient their relationship to new political and economic demands.

Uttaranchal Bill passed
The Lok Sabha tonight took one step forward towards creation of Uttaranchal, which would become the 27th State, with the passage of a Bill for carving the new State out of Uttar Pradesh.

Chadha case: HC sees no need to step in
The Delhi High Court today upheld a trial court order dismissing Mr. Win Chadha's application for going abroad for medical treatment. He is one of the accused in the Rs. 64- crore Bofors pay-offs case.
